Drama and Theatre

Drama and Theatre is an active and creative course which aims to nurture students’ enthusiasm and interest in theatre, both as an audience member and as a participant …

Drama and Theatre is a course that encourages creativity. It is designed for students who enjoy reading and watching plays and taking part in drama – as a performer, director or designer. The course is designed to develop critical skills by exploring and analysing some of the world’s top theatre companies and dramatists.

In your first year you will study a number of set texts and learn about what actors, directors and designers do to interpret plays in performance. Through creative practical workshops, you will develop your own performance skills whilst learning how texts can be manipulated to communicate meaning to audiences.

You will then further develop your creative and exploratory skills by devising your own original group performance. You’ll also see a live theatre production and learn how to write your own theatre reviews and evaluations.

There are regular trips to the theatre, often in conjunction with other subjects. In the last year we have seen The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Hamlet in Stratford-upon-Avon, The History Boys in Birmingham and The Crucible in Manchester. Students have also participated in visits to the BBC in Salford Quays and HOME in Manchester.

You will be assessed via written and practical examinations over the course of the two years.

While some students do, after rigorous audition processes, go to Drama School after completing A Levels, the most common destination after completing this course is Higher Education. The course equips students with essential skills in areas such as essay writing and analysis, public speaking, project management, time management and confidence; as such, the course will provide an excellent grounding for further study and future employment, in pathways such as acting, journalism, teaching and events management.

To study an A level programme in Drama and Theatre, you will need to achieve 5 GCSEs grade A* – C, including English and Maths.

This subject will take two years to complete. Please note that this is a linear subject, therefore you will be taking all of your exams at the end of your second year. However, there will be practical assessments in your first year.
