Religious Studies

Are you interested in religion? Do you find yourself drawn to questions about the nature of the universe and our place in it? If so Religious Studies may be the course for you …

In your first year you will begin by looking at Philosophy and Religion. You will explore some of the key questions of religious philosophy. Can we prove God exists? Why is there evil and suffering in the world? Is religious language meaningful? What is the function of religion in today’s society? You will also be exploring Christian perspectives on a variety of topics including God, life after death and the role of religion in society.

In the second year you will focus on Ethics, religion and society and you will study a variety of ethical theories in the context of human life and death. Can euthanasia or abortion be morally justified? Are we free? Do we have moral responsibility? You will also explore Christian perspectives on various topics including morality and sexual identity.

There are opportunities to attend talks from religious and philosophy experts.

You will sit two three hour exams at the end of your second year. Each exam is worth 50% of your overall A-level qualification. There is no coursework element to this subject.

The majority of Religious Studies students go on to Higher Education to study a wide range of subjects. This course will help you develop an enquiring mind and the ability to develop an argument, analyse the perspectives of others and reach logical conclusions. These are important skills sought by higher education and employers – particularly in law, education, social work, politics, medicine, administration and the media.

To study an A-level programme you will need to achieve 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above, including English and Maths. There are no additional requirements for this subject, but a GCSE in RS or RE would be beneficial.

This subject will take two years to complete. Please note that you will be taking both your exams at the end of your second year.
