Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Performance (CITC)

Working in partnership with Manchester City Football Club’s Foundation; City in the Community are offering a Level 3 BTEC (equivalent to 3 A-levels) in sport and football.

What Will I Study?

The course does contain a generous amount of sports participation alongside the football element of the programme. Practical elements occur within many units such as Sports Coaching, Fitness Testing and Fitness Training and Programming. The practical elements of the course will be supported by class tasks, logbooks and both written and practical assessments to demonstrate your knowledge of the unit.

  • Unit 3: Assessing Risk in Sport
  • Unit 4: Fitness Training and Programming
  • Unit 5: Sports Coaching
  • Unit 6: Sports Development

  • Unit 9: Practical Individual Sports
  • Unit 10: Leadership in Sport

Additional Activities

Students will play in the City in the Community BTEC league as well as national cup competitions.


Learner work is assessed and marked internally using a broad range of assessment methods by course tutors. Marked work audits will be completed on a regular basis throughout the duration of the course to ensure consistently high levels of Quality Assurance. Each individual unit is graded Pass (P), Merit (M) or Distinction (D).

Entry Requirements

To study this course, you will need 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above, including English and Maths. You will need a keen interest in sport and football, and we would prefer you to have a GCSE in PE.

This course particularly suits those wanting to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector as sports coaches, instructors and leaders and who also have a real passion for football. It is also ideal for those wishing to progress to higher education to study a sport related degree such as coaching, sports development and sports science. Alongside the academic aspect of the course, you will also have access to quality coaching to enhance your football skills and playing ability.
