A brilliant first game of the season for the college against Xaverian, drawing 39-39 with record numbers of players getting themselves involved in rugby for the first time.
The players endured, what turned out to be, a hard fought task with both teams piling huge amounts of pressure on each other in order to get their noses in front. Connell started the stronger, stretching their lead to 15 points in the first 10 minutes with tries from Sam Kalu and Oreofe Animashaun. It seemed as though the home team thought the game had already been won, but Xaverian turned the score on it’s head and were leading at half-time 17-15.
Xaverian continued to apply increased amounts of pressure to Connell, stretching their lead with another 2 tries. Realising the work they needed to put in to gain a good result from the game, the men in blue scored a host of tries through Danny Woodhead, Rob Hulme and Usman Azeez to take them 7 points ahead of their opponents. A last gasp attack though, created an opportunity for Xaverian to draw the game having scored a try, a conversion was needed to level the game in the last play. This was successful.
An intense and well fought battle ended in a draw with both sides going home pleased with their work. Connell with a very promising start to the season and what looks like a very strong squad to carry them through their remaining games.
